I am a regional sales manager with AT&T in Sacramento Ca. I have been with them for 10 years and started with them when we were Pacific Bell and then SBC and now AT&T.
In 2001 I got the opportunity to work out a sponsorship deal through my company at that time Pacific Bell and Fred Penney Racing and driver Eric Schmidt. We ran a very limited Southwest Tour schedule. That was a one year deal and did not go so well for us.
The following year 2002, Eric moved to Golden State Racing with car owner Frank Jordan. It was a tough decision to leave Fred Penney Racing to go with Eric and Golden State but it has worked out for us in the long run. The very next year Eric and Golden State Racing won the Late Model Championship at Stockton 99 Speedway and also finished a very respectable 6th in the NASCAR regional standing and was also the Win-River 150 Champion.
With the success that we had in 2003 we elected to add a 2nd team to the fold in 2004 and worked out a deal with John Moore and JM Racing. John ran a very solid season in 2004 and finished a strong 3rd in the Late Model Championship.
In 2004 Eric and the team elected to make a move to running a variety of races in the NASCAR Weekly Series, WESTCAR Series, SRL Wild West Shootout and Southwest Tour in preparation for a run at the SRL Wild West title in 2005..
In 2005 Eric and the team finished the season in 3rd place and left them looking forward to 2006 where they were going to run for the championship again.. In 2005 John had a much tougher decision to make. On October 16th, 2004 in a practice session preparing for the upcoming 2005 season he lost his son JD in a racing incident. JD lost control of his car and hit the turn one wall head on killing him instantly. After a long winter season and lots of missing his son John decided to go back and make a bid for the 2005 championship where he finished 3rd place.
In 2005 I also turned my first laps in any type of race car. I had been to several driving schools, first it was the Dan Holtz CARS driving school at the famed and now gone Mesa Marin Speedway in late 2003 while spotting for John Burritt while we ran the ASA Speed Track Series. Later that year for fathers dad my now ex-wife bought me a Race School Package from the Performance Racing Center at the Famed Irwindale Speedway in LA. In 2005 I got a arrive and drive package for 3 – 15 lap sessions in the Spectator Racing Cooperate American Modified Series at All American Speedway in Roseville, Ca. I was hooked instantly !!!!
In 2005 I won the SRS CAM Series Championship. I raced in 7 races with 5 wins, 1 second and 1 third place that allowed me to wrap up the championship.
In 2006 Eric and won the SRL Wild West Championship. John had an OK season with a highlight of winning the last ever late model race at Stockton 99 Speedway as it closed its doors after 60 years of racing and I had a very limited 2006 season running in and winning the 1st race of the season. I became a River Rat in 2006 and well…that’s a whole another story.
We will all be back racing a full schedule in 2007.
