All hardwood floors require some regular maintenance and attention to keep them looking their best and lasting to their full potential. In order to protect your wood floors, please observe the following:

Regularly clean the floor by vacuuming or dusting to prevent dirt from accumulating and scratching the finish.

Dirt and water are very harmful to your floors. Place area rugs inside every entrance of the house to prevent bringing in outside dirt onto the floor. Also to protect your floor in kitchen areas, place rugs in front of the sink, dishwasher and/or work stations.

The use of felt pads under all furniture will ease movement and prevent scratches. Place the pads under everything that touches the floor. Pads can be bought at any hardware store, or can be supplied upon request.

High heel shoes will definitely damage your floors, leaving little indents in the wood. When at all possible, try to avoid high heels on the floor.

Protect your floors as much as possible against direct sunlight. Over time, intense natural light will discolor hardwood floors.

Never use any kind of wax, or wax based products as a cleaner for your floor. Over time, the wax will build up, and become thick and begin to discolor the floor. Normally wood floors are very clean in general, and weekly dusting is all that is required. Clean any spills immediately. Do not let liquids sit on the floor for any length of time. When cleaning, it is suggested that you use a proper floor cleaner designed for hardwood floors. This will remove any built up dirt without damaging the finish. The wood floor cleaning kit is available upon request. It is mistakenly told that oil soap can be used as a cleaner. As it does clean, it also tends to leave a residue on the floor diminishing the look of the finish.

For newly sanded floors, (when at all possible)  please allow 72 hours before moving in any furniture, A minimum of 2 weeks is required before placing any type of rugs on the floor. The final coat of polyurethane will be dry enough to walk on within 16 hours, but total cure time can take up to 30 days. It is possible that rugs placed before 2 weeks time can stick and pull the finish. Also, when painting after the floor has been complete, please do not use plastic drop clothes. Canvas drop clothes are safer. If covering the floor with Rosin paper, do not tape the paper to the floor. Over lap the paper by 3”, then tape the paper to the paper. Tape on the floor will definitely pull the finish.

These are a few guidelines you can go by to keep you floors looking beautiful for years to come.    IM002115.JPG
